Scrapewise analysis of amazon.co.uk, 23-24 Sep 2026

The high category median has a likely cause: Toys & Games holds plenty of products with parts, motors and big boxes. Ride-on cars, telescopes and remote-control cars pull the middle of the category up, while playing cards and dice sit near the bottom. A median of £28.49 is the middle of that mix, not a typical basket.

LEGO is the one toy search where almost every listing shows sales. Of LEGO set listings, 99.6% show a "bought in past month" label, against 36.6% across all 197,022 products. Only a handful of other searches, such as cat food and dog food, come close.

It is also well liked. Among rated listings, LEGO sets have a median of 4.8 stars, the top median rating in our data. Stepping on a brick does not seem to count.

Competition is the catch. On products with offer data, LEGO sets have a mean of 10.3 sellers per listing, and Amazon is among the sellers on 96.5% of them. Because we capture about 11 sellers per product at most, 10.3 is an undercount: many LEGO listings hit our ceiling. A reseller joining a LEGO listing is joining a crowd, with Amazon usually in it. On a listing that busy, the product is the same for everyone, so price and delivery tend to decide who gets the sale. Our post on the most competitive Amazon products ranks every search by that crowd.

Price Spread Inside Toy Searches

A category median hides how far prices stretch inside one search. We measure that with the p90/p10 ratio: the price near the top of a search divided by the price near the bottom.

Chess sets have one of the widest spreads in our findings, at 21.3x among priced listings. A small plastic travel set and a carved wooden set with a board can both answer the same search, at very different prices. The dearer set does not come with better moves.

Jigsaw 1000 searches are the opposite, at 2.0x, one of the narrowest spreads we found. A thousand-piece puzzle is a fairly standard product, and the prices say so.

The offer pages add a second view of price. When a toy has two or more new offers, the dearest offer typically costs 1.46 times the cheapest one on the same product. Across all categories that ratio is 1.33, and only beauty, at 1.53, is higher. For a brand, that gap is the room resellers have to undercut each other on your product. The category-by-category price levels are in average price on Amazon UK by category.

Who Sells Toys: Model Kits and Seller Addresses

Seller mix differs a lot from one toy search to the next. On single-seller model kit listings, 94.4% come from sellers with a declared China or Hong Kong address, one of the highest shares of any search in our data. LEGO is the opposite case: it is sold mostly through crowded listings where Amazon itself is present.

Two caveats belong next to that number. Country here means the business address a seller declares on its profile, not where a product was made or where the stock sits. And a single-seller listing is often a private-label product, so the share describes who lists those products, not who buys them. Our post on UK vs Chinese sellers on Amazon shows the same pattern across every category: seller mix follows the product type.

What It Means for Sellers and Brands

For toy sellers, a high median price can leave room for margin, and for competitors too. Check the spread in your own search before you set a price. In a chess set search, a price that looks high may sit comfortably in the middle; in a jigsaw 1000 search, the same markup would stand out at once.

For brands, LEGO shows what happens when a product sells well: resellers arrive, and Amazon often sells it too. If your toys have a price policy, watch who is on your listings and at what price. Our guide to MAP monitoring and brand protection covers the routine, and counterfeit detection for e-commerce brands covers the darker end of the same problem.

Mind the calendar too. Our snapshot was taken in late September, and the "bought in past month" label looks back one month. For toys, that is probably a quieter stretch than the weeks before Christmas, so treat the labels here as a baseline, not a peak. We have one snapshot, so we cannot say how much the picture shifts in December.

For analysts, report toys at keyword level. A category that holds both playing cards and ride-on cars has no single typical price, and a median alone will not tell you where a new product fits. For the same measures across every category, see the full Amazon UK marketplace statistics.

How We Collected This Data

All three Scrapewise Amazon scrapers fed this post. The Amazon Search API supplied the price, star rating, review count and sales label of every toy listing, from 7 pages of results for each search. The Amazon Offers API returned every offer on each product, which gave us sellers per listing, Amazon's presence and the gap between the dearest and cheapest offer. The Amazon Seller API returned the declared business address behind each seller, which is where the model kit figure comes from; only aggregates are published.

The three are priced the same, at €0.00015 per call or €0.15 per 1,000 calls, and can run daily, every few days, weekly or monthly, or on demand. Create an account to run them on the toy searches you sell in.
