The Data

On Amazon UK, a low rating is unusual. Of all rated products in our sample, 89% score 4 stars or more and the median sits at 4.4. Just 3.5% of rated products sit under 3.5 stars. So when a whole search falls well below that norm, it stands out.

These are the searches with the lowest share of rated listings at 4 stars or more:

Search keyword, as typed Share rated 4 stars or more
posture corrector 49.5%

teeth whitening kit 57.0%

de icer 58.6%
egg slicer 58.7%
All rated products 89%
Bar chart: only 49.5% of rated posture corrector listings score 4 stars or more, the lowest among searches with a solid rated base, against 89% of all rated Amazon UK products.

Posture correctors are in a group of their own. The median rated posture corrector scores 3.9 stars, well below the market median of 4.4, and only 49.5% of the rated listings reach 4 stars. A few smaller searches, with fewer rated listings, dipped lower still, but on a base small enough that a handful of reviews could move them a long way.

The rest of the list is more varied. Two of the six lowest-rated searches are homes for small pets: hamster cages and rabbit hutches. The tenants cannot leave reviews, so their owners do it for them. The others are a de-icer, an egg slicer and teeth whitening kits: products where the result is easy to judge and easy to be disappointed by.

What the Best Rated Searches Look Like

For contrast, the top of the scale is crowded. Every rated dog food and hair oil listing in our sample scored 4 stars or more, and LEGO sets had the highest median rating we found, at 4.8. These are products that do one clear job, and the people who buy them seem to agree that they do it.

Posture correctors sit at the other end for a plausible reason: they promise a result that depends on the wearer and takes time to show. A product that promises a change in how you sit is harder to satisfy than one that promises to feed a dog.

Low Rated but Still Selling

A poor rating does not stop a product from selling. In our sample, 345 products rated under 3.5 stars still showed a "100+ bought in past month" label. The biggest of them, an Amazon own-brand baby wipes multipack rated 3.4 stars, showed at least 40,000 bought a month.

Drain unblockers appear near the top of that list of low-rated products that still sell. When the sink is blocked, a star rating seems to be a secondary concern. Razor blades and mops also turn up often. They are everyday needs, bought when the old one runs out, and the shopper likely picks a familiar product or the cheapest one on the page rather than the best reviewed.

Column chart: 345 Amazon UK products rated under 3.5 stars still show a 100+ bought in past month label; 47.3% of products rated 4.6 to 4.8 show a sales label.
Scrapewise analysis of amazon.co.uk, 23-24 Sep 2026

Stars still matter overall. Products rated 4.6 to 4.8 carry a sales label on 47.3% of listings, far more often than low-rated products do. But the relationship is not a straight line. Products with a perfect 5.0 carry a label on just 11.1% of listings, the lowest of any rated band, because most of them rest on only a handful of reviews. Our post asking is 5 stars on Amazon trustworthy looks at that group in detail.

What It Means for Sellers and Brands

For sellers in a low-rated search, benchmark within the search, not against the whole market. A posture corrector at 4.0 stars sits above that search's median of 3.9, even though it is below the market median of 4.4. Comparing it with dog food would make any product look like a problem.

For brands, a low-rated search is an opening. If most rated listings in a search fall short of 4 stars, a product that clearly works has room to stand out, and its reviews can do much of the selling. Watch the rating and review count of the listings around yours as closely as your own.

For brands that find their own product in a low-rated search, check what the reviews complain about before you change the product. Some complaints are about fit or expectations, which better listing text can fix. Others point to quality problems, copies or grey imports, which is where counterfeit detection for brand protection helps.

For analysts, remember that star scores cluster high. With 89% of rated products at 4 stars or more, a 4-star product is below the typical score, as our guide to what is a good Amazon rating explains. Treat a search's rating profile as its own baseline, and see the full Amazon UK marketplace report for the method behind every number here.

How to Spot a Low-Rated Search Early

You can build the same view for your own category with three fields per product: the star rating, the review count and the sales label. For each search, work out the share of rated listings at 4 stars or more and the median rating, and set aside searches with only a few rated listings. A search that sits well below the market median is a risk or a chance for you, depending on whether your product fixes what the reviews complain about.

Repeat the check over time. A search whose ratings drift down can signal a wave of weak copies, and one whose ratings climb suggests that a better product has arrived and shoppers have noticed.

How We Collected This Data

The Amazon Search API read every rating in this post from amazon.co.uk results pages, 7 pages deep for each of 868 keywords. For every product it returned the star rating, the review count, the price and the "bought in past month" label. From those four fields we built the rating shares by search and set low ratings against sales labels. The scraper is priced at €0.00015 per call, or €0.15 per 1,000 calls, and you can schedule it daily, every few days, weekly or monthly, or on demand.
