Location means the declared business address on the profile, reduced to a postcode area in the UK and to a province or city in China. It is where a business is registered, not where its staff or stock are. We publish shares only, and any area with fewer than 10 sellers is left out. That is why no single London area tops the list, even though London as a whole is home to many sellers.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The EC and WC areas need a second caveat. They are home to many registered-office services, accountants and company formation agents, so a business can carry an EC or WC address without anyone working there. The EC share of 3.1% therefore says more about where companies are registered than about where they trade. Registered-office services exist in other large cities too, so no area is entirely free of this effect.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"shared-addresses-and-virtual-offices\">Shared Addresses and Virtual Offices\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Some addresses host more than one seller. The sellers at all 10 of the largest shared addresses are mostly UK-based.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>A shared address is legal and common. The likely reading is a formation agent, a virtual office or an accountant's address used by many client companies. That is a reading, not a finding: we did not check who runs any address, and a shared address does not mean the sellers share an owner. Their declared addresses concentrate in a few places.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>Guangdong province: 50.5% of China-based sellers.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>Shenzhen: 32.6%, and Guangzhou: 9.2%, both in Guangdong.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>Dongguan: 3.2%, Wuhan: 2.4%, Xiamen: 2.0% and Yiwu: 1.7%.\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>Zhejiang province: 7.5%, and Fujian province: 6.2%.\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\u003Cp>The cities fit the provinces. Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Dongguan are all in Guangdong, a large manufacturing and trading region. Yiwu, known for its wholesale markets, is in Zhejiang, and Xiamen is in Fujian. Wuhan is the one city in the list outside the three coastal provinces.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Two caveats matter here. First, 60.8% of these addresses are written in Chinese characters, and 25.3% matched no city in our list, so the city shares count only the addresses our matcher could place. The real shares are probably higher. Second, as in the UK, a registered address is not always where the goods are made or stored. The overall country split, with its own caveats, is in our post on \u003Ca href=\"/blogs/amazon-uk-sellers-by-country-2026\">Amazon UK sellers by country\u003C/a>.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"how-we-turned-addresses-into-areas\">How We Turned Addresses Into Areas\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>A UK postcode area is the letter or letters at the start of a postcode: M for Manchester, B for Birmingham, EC for East Central London. We read the postcode in each declared UK address and kept only those opening letters, so no street, building or full postcode enters the analysis.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>For China-based sellers we matched the city and province names in each address, in English and in Chinese characters, against a fixed list. Addresses that matched nothing were counted as unmatched rather than guessed. Hong Kong-based sellers, 4.7% of all sellers, are counted as their own group and are not part of the China figures.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Any area with fewer than 10 sellers is left out of the tables and charts. That keeps small places, where a share could point to one business, out of the published figures.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"what-it-means-for-sellers-and-brands\">What It Means for Sellers and Brands\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp>Treat a seller's address as a registration detail, not a location of operations. An EC address may be a service address, and a Shenzhen address may belong to a trading company that ships from a UK warehouse.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>For brands checking who sells their products, an address is one data point among several. Combine it with the business name, VAT details and feedback history before you draw a conclusion, and remember that many small, legitimate sellers use a service address. A headline such as "most sellers are in one city" is rarely supported by postcode data alone, because the address field records a legal detail, not where the work happens.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>For analysts, never map sellers to towns without flagging registered-office areas, and report shares of a named base, such as UK-address sellers, rather than raw counts.
